The mystery of Shri Maheshwarnath Babaji also known as Mahavatar Babaji
Maheshwarnath babaji is easily one of the most mysterious and yet very influential figure of modern times. People learned about him through the world famous Paramhansa Yogananda through his book "An Autobigraphy of a Yogi".
Later several other people such as Yogi Lahiri Mahashaya and in modern times Sri M.
While many of these people give very detailed accounts of their time with Maheshwarnath babaji who is also called Mahavatar babaji, there are no photographs of him available. Absolutely none. Sri M claimed that babaji could simply hide himself from the photos and absolutely hated being photographed.
Sri M's accounts of Babaji are full of magical moments where babaji performs all sort of miracles including time travel, instantaneous travel, traveling through walls, telepathy, omniscience and what not.
The mystery thickens further as many other people too give even more hard to believe miracle accounts.
But is this true ?
There is no shortage of frauds in India. People lie and claim fake miracles all the time. But what about babaji ?
The area near rishikesh is full of divine souls and for last 100 years there are definitely different accounts of spotting of people who match babaji's description. It is not too hard to believe that there indeed was one or several people who went by the description of babaji.
Now unlike most saints Babaji did not build any ashram or any sampradaya. He was always alone and worked only with very specific of his disciples. That is something everyone who claim to have known him has stated independently. But that is what makes him mysterious.
One of the reasons why I think Babaji is genuine is because completely unrelated people like Paramhansa Yogananda, Sri M, Yogiraj Mahashay and many others have talked about him and have said things which are similar. This is not possible unless all of them are conspiring secretly, which is not possible either.
If you travel in rishikesh and inspect newspapers of last 50 years you do find mentions of people who resemble babaji and his unique nature. Independent, never deals in money, never stays at one place for too long and constantly moving. He also appears at different places at the same time.
Who was babaji exactly ?
All evidence clearly points to the fact that he was indeed an enlightened yogi of Himalayas which was very different from others gurus because he was not interested in building a culture around him. Instead he seemed to have very cleverly produces disciples at different time in history who have gotten popular in different regions. For example Yogananda in west, Mahashaya and Sri M in India and many many others.
He was not like Saibaba who focused more on common people or was personally worshipped but Babaji was a true tapasvi in the tradition of great sages like Vyas or Durvasa or Vasishtha who acted as a guide and travelled extensively.
How can we know babaji better ?
Babaji isnt a deity. He is not like Saibaba. He isnt here to help ordinary individuals. He is here to create spiritual leaders. Follow Kriya Yoga and meditate and you will end up on his path. Who knows he might find you if he wants to.

Do not chase individuals like Mahavatar Bababji. They are not going to solve your problems. Clearly he is an yogi of Maharshi ability. Such people very rarely appear in Kaliyuga and when they do, they come for very specific narrow purpose. Do not think of them as deity. Rather focus on their disciples and what they are teaching.
